Four of our local history society committee members have charted the town’s development from the historic “square” to
its future. We are now taking pre-orders for our latest book, Sawbridgeworth Then and Now, which explores how the town developed into the place we know today.

The book traces the growth of Sawbridgeworth around the London Road, Bell Street, Knight Street and Station Road “square”, and closes with a look at the town’s future. Along the way, it covers the town’s architectural heritage, transport through the years, community assets and open spaces, and the notable people, recent and from the more distant past, who have contributed to the town. It also looks at local schools, community groups and town events, as well as the pubs, shops and businesses that have shaped everyday life.
The book is written by four members of the Society’s committee: David Royle, Chris Finch, Hazel
Mead, and Gill Munro.

Supporting local history
The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society is run by volunteers. Money raised from book sales goes towards the research, talks, website articles and publications that keep the town’s story alive, helping the Society continue preserving and sharing Sawbridgeworth’s history for future generations.
Quote from the society “We are delighted to be releasing this book in time for
Christmas. It has been prepared with love and care over many hours of research and
writing, and it reflects our commitment to preserving Sawbridgeworth’s history for
generations to come. The story of our town is something every resident can enjoy,
and we hope this book makes a welcome gift.”
